An ex-student of Valencia Secondary School, Ibadan, Oluwaferanmi David Ojo, has dragged the school’s proprietor, Engr. Morakinyo Goodness, before the Oyo State High Court over alleged physical abuse and degrading treatment.
In a suit filed on March 18, 2026, Ojo is seeking a declaration that the treatment he allegedly suffered in September 2016 amounts to a violation of his fundamental right to dignity, as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution and other relevant laws.
He is also asking the court to award N50 million in damages against the respondent for the alleged breach of his rights.
According to court documents, the incident reportedly occurred on September 13, 2016, at the school premises in Akobo, Ibadan, where the applicant claims he was subjected to degrading treatment.
The suit, filed under the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009, is aimed at holding the school leadership accountable, with the court expected to fix a hearing date.
In response, the management of Valencia Group of Schools has denied the allegations, describing them as false and misleading, while noting that the matter is already before a competent court of law in Oyo State.
The school in a release signed by the Director of School, Engr. Goodness Morakinyo and obtained by OYO AFFAIRS on X stated that the incident in question involved disciplinary action taken after the student allegedly insulted the proprietor on a WhatsApp group, adding that the punishment administered was in line with its rules and did not amount to abuse.
It further denied claims that the student was stripped, assaulted, or subjected to any inhumane treatment, insisting that such allegations were fabricated and intended to tarnish the school’s reputation.
Valencia also disclosed that the matter was resolved shortly after the incident in 2016 following a meeting with the student’s parents, and maintained that it has always upheld a tradition of responsible and humane discipline.
The school urged the public to remain calm and avoid drawing conclusions from social media narratives, expressing confidence that the court will fairly determine the matter.
