Widespread panic swept through the entertainment community late Friday after rumours claimed iconic Yoruba actor Lere Paimo, famously known as Eda Onile Ola, had died at 86.
The claims circulated rapidly online, prompting immediate concern from fans and colleagues.
Relief followed shortly after when the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) moved to dispel the rumour.
The group said it reached out directly to Paimo’s family and confirmed through his wife that the actor is alive and in stable condition.
According to a representative of the association, the false report “spread faster than usual and created unnecessary fear,” noting that accurate information became available within minutes of contacting the household.
His personal assistant also addressed the situation, describing the allegation as another unfortunate case of repeated misinformation.
He explained that the actor was simply resting when the rumour emerged.
“This is not the first time such a claim has circulated. Baba was asleep, not in any medical emergency,” he said.
Paimo remains one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre, with a career spanning more than six decades.
His breakthrough role in Ogbori Elemosho still stands as one of the defining performances in the history of Yoruba cinema.
He is currently 85 and will mark his 86th birthday next week, a milestone fans now look forward to celebrating following the confusion.
Industry colleagues urged the public to verify sensitive information before sharing, warning that repeated death hoaxes cause emotional distress for ageing entertainers and their families.
Nollywood watchers expect tributes, clarifications and renewed calls for digital responsibility to follow as the actor’s survival reassures many who grew up admiring his work.
