OYRLEA Impounds Six Cows for Open Grazing Violations in Ibadan

The Oyo State Government has intensified the enforcement of its anti-open grazing regulations, impounding six cows in different parts of Ibadan for violating the state’s livestock control laws.

The enforcement action was carried out by the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA) during routine monitoring operations aimed at ensuring compliance with the state’s ban on open grazing and safeguarding public safety.

According to the Authority, its enforcement team intercepted cattle grazing openly around the Old Ife Road, Alakia and Elebu Idi Ahun areas in Ido Local Government Area.

The practice was said to be in violation of existing state regulations on open grazing and livestock management.

As a result, five cows found grazing within the affected locations were impounded by the enforcement officers.

Oyo State is among several states that have adopted measures to regulate livestock movement and prohibit open grazing as part of efforts to address security concerns, prevent conflicts between herders and farmers, and promote orderly livestock management.

In a related operation conducted on the same day, the team responded to a report of cattle grazing along the busy Mokola highway in Ibadan.

Upon arrival, officials discovered three cows roaming on the highway, creating potential danger for motorists and residents.

The Authority disclosed that one of the cows was immediately impounded, while the remaining two fled before they could be apprehended.

OYRLEA noted that the operation formed part of its ongoing efforts to enforce livestock management regulations and curb open grazing practices that pose threats to public safety, environmental order and peaceful coexistence within communities.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring strict compliance with Oyo State’s anti-open grazing policy.

Speaking on the development, the Chairperson of OYRLEA, retired Justice Aderonke Aderemi, said the agency would continue to monitor compliance across the state and take appropriate enforcement actions against violators.

She emphasized that the government remains determined to protect residents, prevent avoidable accidents and maintain environmental sanity through effective enforcement of relevant laws.

She said the latest enforcement action underscores the Oyo State Government’s resolve to tackle challenges associated with uncontrolled livestock movement and strengthen the implementation of the state’s anti-open grazing framework.
