Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged residents to reject politicians without clear, realistic and people-focused programmes as the 2027 general elections approach.
Makinde made the call on Sunday while speaking with journalists after a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service for his late mother, Chief (Mrs.) Abigail Omojolagbe Makinde, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, Ibadan.
The governor, who marked six years since his mother’s death on October 15, 2020, advised residents to scrutinise the promises and manifestos of political aspirants and their parties before making electoral choices.
He said voters needed to be discerning as the state approached another election cycle, stressing the importance of clear plans for Oyo State’s development.
The memorial service provided an opportunity for the governor to reflect on his mother’s life, recalling her love, the close relationship they shared and their occasional disagreements, which he said always ended in reconciliation.
Delivering the sermon, the Provost of the cathedral, Very Rev. Samuel Olawoyin, cited Deuteronomy 5:16 and commended Makinde for consistently honouring his parents despite the demands of his office.
Olawoyin also praised the governor’s developmental projects across the state’s geopolitical zones and his attention to the welfare of workers and pensioners.
He urged Makinde to remain focused on his responsibilities and trust in God amid commendations and criticisms.
Special prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of the governor’s late parents, as well as for Makinde, his siblings, family and the peace and progress of Oyo State.
Those who accompanied the governor included the Commissioner for Lands, Akin Funmilayo Williams; Commissioner for Energy, Prof. Dahud Shangodoyin; and the governorship candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Bimbo Adekanmbi.
Others were the Chairman of the Christian Wing of the Pilgrims Welfare Board, Bishop David Moradeyo; the Government House Chaplain, Pastor Layi Adisa; family members and other government officials.
