Agbekoya Embarks on a Protest, Demands for the Release of Sunday Ighoho

A Yoruba Socio-Cultural group, Agbekoya warriors, has embarked on a peaceful protest in the early hours of today (Thursday) to call for the unconditional release of Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions such as: “Back to the 1960 national constitution”, “Free free free Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho. He is not a criminal”, and “Agricultural revolution and safety for farmers now amongst others; demanded for the immediate release of the activist, currently in custody of the Republic of Benin.

Meanwhile, Igboho is currently in detention in Benin Republic over issues bothering on illegal migration among other offences.

The group led by its President-General Agbekoya worldwide, Kamorudeen Okikiola were spotted on Ibadan roads, chanting solidarity songs as they demand the release of Sunday Igboho.

The peaceful protest which started from the Mapo Hall in the City center to the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, culminated in the presentation of a seven point demand to the traditional ruler.

Recently, calls for Igboho’s unconditional release has been on the increase, as Igboho’s lawyer, Yomi Alliyu had few weeks ago reportedly pleaded with the government of Benin Republic to immediately release the activist, for urgent medical attention overseas.

Olayomi Koiki, Igboho’s spokesperson had also said his principal was in urgent need of medical attention.

The farmers group therefore vowed that they would not relent until Igboho, whom they claimed was fighting for their rights, is released.

Responding, the palace spokesperson, Adeola Oloko recognised the demands of the Agbekoyas while commending their peaceful walk in the city of Ibadan.

He noted that their 7-point demands would as a matter of urgency, be presented before the Olubadan, and then to President Buhari.

Oloko assured that the demands of their protest which includes addressing security and economic issues bedevilling the Nigerian nation, shall be looked into, in due time.
