Babaloja, Iyaloja General Positions to be Rotated as Oyo Assembly Passes Market Leaders Council Bill into Law

The Oyo State Market Leaders Council Bill, 2020 has been signed into law by the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Following the presentation of the House Committee on Commerce and Cooperatives’ report on Tuesday, the bill was approved.

The establishment of the Babaloja and Iyaloja General offices at the state level, which must alternate among the administrative zones, is one of the law’s main provisions.

According to the Law, the Babaloja and Iyaloja shall be appointed from among the nominations from the seven administrative zones of the state by the market council and shall be ratified by the Oyo State House of Assembly.

The law states the functions of the Babaloja and Iyaloja to include; fostering peace and harmony, among various societies in all markets within the state, advising market councils in matters pertaining to markets and performing such other functions as may be required.

The Speaker, Hon Adebo Ogundoyin said the law is aimed at regulating the activities of the market leaders council in Oyo State.

Recall that to ensure the formulation of an all-inclusive law, the Oyo State House of Assembly organised a public hearing for all the stakeholders on the 14th of July, 2021.

The bill was sponsored by Hon Akintunde Olajide of Lagelu State Constituency.
