Our Realistic Tomorrow: On Policy, Scrutiny, and the Future of Education. By Dr. Adewale Kolapo Kareem (AKK).
As we mark the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr, I extend my warmest greetings to the Muslim Ummah across Oyo State and beyond. May this season of sacrifice, reflection, and gratitude bring peace, renewed hope, and abundant blessings to every home. Eid reminds us of compassion, responsibility, and the collective duty to uplift one another, values that must also reflect in our governance and public policies.
One of the most profound beauties of the democracy we practice is the sacred space it provides for every citizen to express opinions and interrogate public affairs without fear or favour. This freedom of expression is the bedrock upon which my aspiration to serve is built. I have always maintained that the people not only have the right but also the responsibility to question the intent, feasibility, and sincerity of policies presented by those who seek to lead.
Whether one currently holds office or aspires to it, they must be prepared to stand before the court of public opinion. I hold this democratic scrutiny in the highest regard because it ensures governance remains a transparent dialogue between the leader and the led, not a monologue of imposition.
In recent days, I have followed closely the reactions and debates sparked by a video clip from one of my engagements, where I proposed a child benefit stipend for parents who enroll their children in elementary schools. I acknowledge the scepticism, the doubts, and even the misinterpretations that have followed. These are not setback, they are signs of a vibrant and conscious society.
Understandably, many view such a proposal as “unrealistic” or a “campaign gimmick,” given the history of unfulfilled promises in our political landscape. However, I see this reaction differently, it reflects a population that is alert, engaged, and determined to demand better. That, in itself, is a step forward for Oyo State.
Let me be clear: this policy is not born out of political convenience or populist appeal. It is rooted in years of exposure, study, and professional engagement within educational systems in Europe and Australia systems that have successfully implemented similar frameworks to improve school enrollment, reduce poverty, and strengthen human capital development.
As an academic and policy-driven individual, I do not deal in empty rhetoric or optics. I deal in evidence-based solutions. What is often dismissed as “impossible” has, in fact, been tested and proven in multiple parts of the world. This child benefit initiative is achievable through strategic budgetary prioritisation, institutional discipline, and structural reforms, alongside my broader plans for agricultural industrialisation, healthcare transformation, and economic revitalisation.
I urge the good people of Oyo State to see this vision not as a gamble, but as a carefully thought-out pathway to a smarter, more inclusive society. I am not a leader who says, “we will cross the bridge when we get there.” Rather, I am committed to leading us to that bridge, explaining its structure, and being the first to cross it, demonstrating that it is solid, safe, and achievable.
I have nothing to gain from misleading my people. My commitment is driven by a deep sense of responsibility and an unrelenting desire to raise the standard of governance. We are known as the “Pace Setters,” and it is time we live up to that identity, not just in words, but in action, by embracing bold, people-centered policies that prioritize the future of our children over the comfort of outdated political thinking.
The journey to a greater Oyo State requires a shift from reflexive pessimism to constructive engagement. It is easy to dismiss new ideas; it is far more impactful to interrogate how those ideas can work and transform lives across our wards and local governments.
My commitment remains unwavering: I am in this race to deliver a clear, practical blueprint that secures the future of every child in Oyo State. A future where no child is left on the streets, and no parent is burdened by the cost of giving their child an education.
As we celebrate Eid, let us also renew our shared belief in a better tomorrow. Let us hold on to hope, demand accountability, and work together toward building a state that truly reflects our collective aspirations.
It is possible. And by the grace of Almighty Allah, it will be done.
