Celebrity Focus: Olaniyi Mikail Afonja

He was given birth to in Bola, Oyo town, Oyo State, on October 14, 1974. Niyi had his first formal education at St. Michael Primary School, located Òkè-èbó, Oyo State and his secondary education was at Durbar Grammar School, Oyo Town, Oyo State. He is the first child of his parents.

Niyi’s acting career took off in 1992, after he decided to be a performer in a theatre troupe his friend introduced him to. In 1996, he took the giant leap and found his way to Lagos; the land of achieving dreams, a move that became fruitful for his career’s growth and development.

Featuring and leading in many Yoruba movies, mostly as a comic character/actor; he has also produced a few numbers of movies. The movie that shot him into the limelight was “ÒPAKÁN” were he starred as a ridiculous comic character. Since the release of “ÒPAKÁN”, he has been a force to reckon with in the Yoruba movie industry.

He got married in 2013, to Hawawu Omolara, and their union has produced two children so far.

In the course of his career he has been nominated for few awards, namely:

– Best Comedy Actor, Yoruba Movie Academy Awards, 2015.

– Best Movie Producer of The Year (Yoruba), City People Entertainment Awards, 2015.

– Comic Actor of The Year (Yoruba), City People Entertainment Awards, 2015.
