The remains of ex-Super Eagles defender and former Team Manager of 3SC, Ajibade Babalade, will be laid to rest on Friday (today) in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital,
48-year-old Babalade died September 4 2020 in Ibadan, after reportedly suffering cardiac arrest.
The corpse of the former player was displayed yesterday for public tribute at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan with friends, families and ex-internationals in attendance to pay their last respect.
“All is set for the burial of the late Ajibade Babalade and we have a host of former Eagles players already here for the lying-in-state and burial,” Ike Shorunmu told newsmen.
“Friday Ekpo is here already and so also is Dosu Joseph, Wasiu Ikpaye is also here, Waheed Akanji is here as well. And some of our former teammates are on their way already.
“Both the burial and the lying-in-state are taking place at the Liberty Stadium and from there we will go to his private property in Ibadan, where he will be buried.”
The retired defender was a squad member of the Eagles that won bronze at the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal. He played for Nigeria from 1990 to 1998.
Babalade began his professional club career at Stationery Stores of Lagos in 1990, before several stints at 3SC, helping the Oluyole Warriors reach the final of the CAF Champions League in 1996 as captain.
He played professionally abroad at Ivoirian side, Africans Sports, Anyang LG Cheetahs (Korea), SK Strurm Graz (Austria) and Indian club Mohun Bagan AC.
On October 17, 2008 Babalade was named Team Manager of 3SC.
He is survived by a wife and three kids, who are all based in the US.
