Ibadan-based OAU Student Dies After Falling Into Opened Soakaway in School Hostel

A resident of Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo state and a part two student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Miss Ajibola Heritage Ayomikun, died this evening after she fell into a soakaway in BVER Hostel, one of the private hostels in the school’s students village.

According to eyewitnesses, Heritage went to pack some clothes she spread on the line when she fell into the soakaway that was haphazardly covered with some planks.

It was gathered that she was in the soakaway for over an hour until help arrived and she was pulled out after a lot of effort.

She was immediately taken to the OAU Teaching Hospitals Complex, where she was certified dead.

Meanwhile, students of OAU have taken to social media to protest her death with the hashtag #justiceforheritage and the student union body has also demanded that the hostel management be brought to book.

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede led his management team to the scene, sympathised with the students and commiserated with the parents of the deceased.

Professor Ogunbodede, who described the incidence as tragic and unacceptable, promised to critically look into the circumstances that led to the student’s death and mete out appropriate sanctions against those involved or whoever is found culpable.
