Oyo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain, Hon. Segun Olaleye, aka “Radical Brother” has divulged that the reason Governor Seyi Makinde is surprising many people with his ingenious solutions is that he has successfully blocked all revenue leakages in Oyo State.
The politician made this statement when he visited BOTTOM LINE, a political radio show on IBR 92.5fm in Ibadan this weekend, to speak to Aanuoluwapo Omorinde alongside University of Ibadan professor of Education, Rotimi Animashaun.
He said: “I can tell you authoritatively as a former Chairman of House Committee on appropriation that there were leakages. This I raised and fought in the last dispensation but I was called all sorts of names. I can tell you that all these leakages, the incumbent Governor has blocked and so, he has funds to develop the State.”
Just last week, the governor surprised many when, during a visit to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), he announced a 25% reduction in the tuition fees. Some days later, Governor Makinde tripled the National Youth Service Corps Oyo State allowance from N5000 to N15000.
Hon. Olaleye reminded the listeners that many people questioned both moves and the more suspicious of them even wondered out loud if they were just a means for the governor to sustain a populist agenda and queried how he would maintain the payments. He explained that both were possible because the governor was a prudent manager of money who has blocked all revenue leakages.
In his words: “When I hear stuff like this, it makes me proud. It simply means Seyi Makinde is a leader and a prudent manager of resources. He is doing the unusual because he has blocked all the leakages in revenue and so, more money comes into the government coffers.”
He, however, sounded a note of warning to the State Assembly, charging them to assist the governor by checkmating possible excesses of contractors handling the projects the governor signed off on. He also called for a probe of the first contractor on the Agbowo Shopping Complex project saying there were some shady deals going on while he handled the project.
He explained, saying: “that Contractor should be investigated. Some materials he removed from site are nowhere to be found. In this area, the State Assembly can help.”
He also had harsh words for the second contractor of the project who he accused of disrespecting Seye Famojuro, an ally of the governor, wondering why people were casting aspersions on his relationship with the governor
He said “It is not new for people in power either Presidents or Governors to have friends. There are people who are usually close to Governors. During Obasanjo’s regime, we had people like that. I think it’s unfair for anyone to make these one’s object of attack.”
“If you are losing your contract, you know how you got it in the first place! Go through the same channel and stop casting aspersions on individuals.”
The other visitor on the show, professor Animashaun stated that the governor’s gesture of reducing LAUTECH tuition fees by 25% should get any rational person thinking as according to him, the governor could not have made such an announcement without having the funds available.
“The Governor could have sat down with his team to do some calculations and discovered that LAUTECH has been making profit after all”., he said.
