Matchday 16: Shooting Stars Defeat Delta Force FC to Retain First Place

The Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan (3SC) maintained their tight grip on the top spot in Group B1 as they once again thrashed their opponents, Delta Force FC of Asaba by 2 goals to nil on matchday 16 of the 2020/2021 Nigerian National League Season at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.

After the shock loss to Nilayo FC last week, 3SC needed to bounce back with a win, and they duly obliged. Today’s win now has given the Oluyole Warriors a 9-point cushion between them and second-place GoRound FC.

Obviously still smarting from the loss, Shooting Stars started brightly but were uncharacteristically sloppy in the final third as they rushed passes and struggled to connect fluidly.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, the Oluyole Boys could not make their dominance count and came closest to scoring when Akilu Muhammed’s 24th-minute close-range shot came off the woodwork with Onyemaobi, Delta Force’s keeper well-beaten.

Another chance fell their way in the 34th minute but Onyemaobi proved equal to the effort and smothered the shot easily. That was to be the last chance of the half for 3SC as the referee blew his whistle 11 uninspired minutes of football from both sides later.

After the break, the game resumed with 3SC dominating possession as usual, but this time, passing and moving with more purpose.

When the opener finally came in the 62nd minute, nobody in the stadium was surprised to see star striker Gafar Olafimihan wheel away to celebrate his 13th goal of the season.

Stung, the visitors tried to level the scores but the 3SC backline proved equal to their efforts. A late Opeoluwa Olufemi goal made it 2-0 to settle 3SC nerves, confirming the victory for the home team.

The Oluyole Warriors remain in first place in Group B1 with 38 points from 12 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses this season.
