Nigerians have lauded Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s initiative to increase the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state by 26.4%, even at a period the coronavirus pandemic caused a lot of devastation to national and global economy.
The media office of Governor Makinde, making the disclosure on the IGR increase Monday morning, said the governor was able to achieve the feat “without increasing the tax burden on our citizens.”
Though the last figure of the IGR and the latest generated revenue were not disclosed, the governor’s media office, via its Twitter handle, quoting the governor, simply said Oyo State IGR increased by 26.4%, attributing the percentage increase to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) H1 2020 report.
It states: “The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) H1 2020 report shows that our IGR grew by 26.4% even amidst this pandemic. We did this without increasing the tax burden on our citizens. What we have done so far is to focus on our competitive advantage.” – Gov. Seyi Makinde”
Meanwhile, Nigerians have taken to Twitter to commend Governor Makinde’s efforts at increasing the IGR without putting a tax burden on the citizens of the state, which it was said was a fulfilment of his promise not to increase tax to raise funds for government, as presented below:
How Seyi Makinde was able to increase the State IGR by 26.4% amidst the pandemic in H1 2020 without burdening the good people of Oyo State with unnecessary tax should be studied by others. Not trying to ridicule Buhari economy knowledge, but he needs to learn from Makinde.

But ElRufai plans to tax everyone >18 in his state- though he has not given everyone jobs.
There are leaders. And there are clowns.
Oyo state IGR grew by 26.4% even without increasing the tax burden on the citizens.

That we have placed the argument of 2023 on tribe breaks my heart 💔
“…we have listened to the youths. We are designing a sustainable way to engage them, because I will continue to say that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. We have to engage our youths. We will design means…” – Gov. Seyi Makinde. pic.twitter.com/HngvNvPKby

"we can either sit and complain about how the price of oil is falling, and we are surely headed for a recession, or we can plan on using what we have as a nation to attract investment into our country and grow our economy. In Oyo, we have chosen to do the latter." – Seyi Makinde. pic.twitter.com/QwjfhM5BHg
