The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has thrown his weight behind the Iru Ekun Security Network by donating ₦100 million and a brand-new Toyota Hilux to strengthen the community-based security initiative championed by Yoruba Nation advocate, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho.
The royal support was unveiled after Igboho led members of the security outfit on a visit to the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, where discussions centred on improving safety across Yoruba communities and encouraging greater collaboration against insecurity.
Speaking during the engagement, the monarch described the security network as a welcome intervention aimed at complementing the efforts of existing security agencies rather than replacing them.
He stressed that protecting lives and property requires the involvement of every stakeholder.
“Security is a shared responsibility. Whenever individuals and communities unite for the common good while respecting the law, such efforts deserve encouragement,” the Ooni said.
The revered traditional ruler praised Igboho for maintaining what he called a strong commitment to the welfare of the Yoruba people despite prevailing security concerns.
He added that history often remembers leaders who respond decisively during difficult times.
According to the monarch, lasting economic growth, investment and community development can only flourish in an atmosphere of peace.
He therefore urged traditional rulers, business leaders, professionals and influential Yoruba sons and daughters to contribute resources and support towards initiatives that strengthen local security.
He also emphasised that unity remains the region’s greatest strength, noting that collective action would better position Yorubaland to confront emerging security threats and safeguard its cultural heritage.
“The future of our people depends on our ability to work together. When communities are united around a common purpose, peace and progress become easier to achieve,” he added.
Responding, Sunday Igboho expressed gratitude for the financial support, the Hilux vehicle and the Ooni’s endorsement, describing the monarch as a symbol of unity whose leadership continues to inspire Yoruba people across Nigeria and in the diaspora.
“The confidence reposed in this initiative will strengthen our resolve.
“We remain committed to protecting communities through lawful and responsible operations,” Igboho said.
He disclosed that the visit also allowed him to brief the Ooni on the activities of the Iru Ekun Security Network while seeking continued royal guidance as the organisation expands its operations.
Igboho further revealed plans to convene a security summit involving traditional rulers from different parts of Yorubaland.
According to him, the gathering will focus on practical strategies for tackling insecurity through stronger cooperation between community leaders and relevant authorities.
He maintained that the proposed meeting, subject to the Ooni’s approval, is expected to take place at the palace in Ile-Ife.
He also reiterated that the Iru Ekun Security Network would continue to operate within the law, prioritising intelligence gathering, community policing and peaceful collaboration with security agencies and local residents.
