…Promises to Remain Impartial
The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has started screening candidates contesting for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the local government council elections holding in May.
The exercise is one of the measures put in place by the commission to ensure a hitch-free election and was conducted at the commission’s premises.
The Chairman of the Commission, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju (SAN) shared his thoughts after assessing the exercise and promised that the Commission will remain impartial and would provide a level playing ground for all the political parties involved.
He also expressed his admiration for all the political parties and relevant stakeholders for putting their trust in the commission. He also urged them to communicate to their supporters the importance of coming out en-masse to vote for their preferred candidate.
The coordinator of the screening exercise, Chief Kunmi Agboola also spoke at the event and said the exercise had become imperative for the commission to determine the eligibility of candidates for the positions they were contesting for.
According to him, “Thirteen political parties were attended to during the exercise, while the remaining parties are scheduled for Friday this week and next week Monday and Tuesday.”
In their separate remarks, the Chairmanship Candidates of the Zenith Labour Party, Ido Local Government, Hon. Opeyemi Semiu and Adegboye Isaac of Social Democratic Party, Ibadan North East respectively commended the commission and their members for building public confidence for inclusive participation.
Hon. Opeyemi further said that the large turnout indicated renewed trust and confidence from political parties in OYSIEC leadership in conducting fair polls.
Also speaking, the State Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Barrister Bimpe Adelowo admonished members of the various political parties to conduct themselves properly before, during and after the election.
The Director of the National Orientation Agency, (NOA), Oyo State, Mrs. Folake Ayoola, FCAI, was also around at the exercise.
