Oyo Rep Calls for Urgent Rehabilitation of Ido-Eruwa-Igboora-Igangan-Iganna Road

A member of the 9th House of Representatives representing Ibarapa Central/ Ibarapa North Federal Constituency, Hon Dr. Ajibola Muraina had yesterday during plenary, moved a motion on the need to rehabilitate Ido-Eruwa-Igboora- Igangan-Iganna Road in Oyo state.

The motion was seconded by Hon Julius Pondi representing Burutu Federal Constituency, Delta State and the house unanimously adopted the motion together with the prayers urging the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to as a matter of urgency, commence rehabilitation of Ido-Eruwa-Igboora -Igangan-Iganna road in Oyo state and mandating the Committees on Works and FERMA to include the rehabilitation of the road in the 2023 budget estimates.

Reading the motion, Hon. Ajibola noted that Ido-Eruwa- Igboora-Igangan-Iganna road in Oyo state is one of the major highways in the country which connects the Southwest with the Northwest and North-central, as well as links Nigeria to the Federal Republic of Benin.

He also raised that the road is very strategic to the people of Oyo state as it runs through Ibarapa land, which is the food basket of Oyo state.

Expressing concern on the worrisome state of the road, the Ibarapa Central/North representative further noted that, the federal government has failed, refused, or neglected to carry out any meaningful maintenance work on the road, since the construction of the road by the defunct Western Regional Government of Nigeria over 61 years ago, and the subsequent acquisition of the road by the federal government.

He further described the state of the road as having potholes, poor drainage, poorly placed signs and traffic signals, which makes driving dangerous for commuters, adding that several residents and commuters have lost their lives and farm produce worth billions of naira loss, as a result of motor accidents triggered by the bad road.

He therefore urged the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to as a matter of urgency, commence rehabilitation of Ido-Eruwa-Igboora- Igangan-Iganna road in Oyo state; in order to ensure safety for commuters and reduce to the barest minimum, activities of armed robbers, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminals who have taken advantage of the deplorable state of the road, to unleash terror on unsuspecting residents and commuters.

He further posited that if the state of the condition of the road is improved; travel time, increased fares and unemployment will drastically reduce and thus attract investment that will in turn, contribute to the country’s economy.

Concluding his motion, he urged the federal government to mandate the Committees on Works and FERMA to include the rehabilitation of the road in the 2023 budget estimates.
