The Oyo State Government has revealed that residents who fail to adhere to the state’s COVID-19 protocol would be arrested and prosecuted from next month.
Mrs Kunmi Oladipo, a coordinator of enforcement from the state COVID-19 emergency operation centre and risk communication pillar, made this known today during an enforcement mission to Bodija market in Ibadan.
Mrs Oladipo explained that there was a need to intensify sensitization on COVID-19 and underscored the importance of complying with the guidelines since the pandemic was not yet over.
She also revealed that the state recorded a low level of compliance to the wearing of masks in public places particularly, the markets.
She noted that the enforcement team would for a month, first sensitize, persuade and ensure compliance before embarking on arrest and protection.
The President of environmental health officers association of Nigeria, Oyo state chapter Tijani Adegoke who was on the enforcement team explained the state government would not relent in its effort at ensuring compliance to COVID-19 directives in public places, and added that the enforcement team had started restraining people without facemasks from gaining access into the market
Several traders at the market commended the effort of the state government in tackling the virus and promised to adhere to the directives of wearing a facemask, and as well, provide handwashing facilities in the market.
