Some students of the University of Ibadan have been displaced as a result of a fire accident at an off-campus accommodation at the University’s second gate.
According to reports, the fire started in one of the upstairs rooms which immediately spread to the other rooms.
Firefighters were summoned by residents of surrounding buildings and men from the Federal Fire Service and their state equivalents reacted to the distress call.
The firefighters worked together to put out the fire that surged through the roof and destroyed parts of the structure.
The fire destroyed some of the rooms and the roof of the structures, but firefighters battled the blaze until it was put out, preventing the building from being completely destroyed.
Some of the students in the building were overheard telling their neighbours that they had no place to sleep because their rooms had been destroyed by fire.
Mr Ismail Adeleke, Director of Operations for Oyo State Fire Services, verified the event on Wednesday evening.
Adeleke stated that the incident is still under investigation.
“Our personnel just returned from the location, and they were able to extinguish the fire,” he stated.
“Investigation is still ongoing and the cause of the fire will be revealed as the investigation progresses.”
