UI name Borno Governor Alumnus of the Year

The Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum was honored as the University of Ibadan (UI) alumnus of the year on April 10, 2021, the fifth person to win the award since 1973 and was also awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Having been a M.Sc. Agricultural Engineering student at the university from 1997-1998 before obtaining his PhD at University of Maiduguri in 2009, the decision to honor him with the award was a popular one with U.I alumnus worldwide.

The award presentation show was held at Dame Edith Okowa Auditorium, Dr Michael Omolayole Alumni complex at the University main campus and was graced by the presence of dignitaries like the Osun and Kwara State governors as well as the former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac F. Adewole, among others.

The previous president of U.I’s alumni association, Dr. Kemi Anthony Emina had the honor of presenting Prof. Zulum the award and described the Governor’s performance in office so far as “outstanding”, adding that Zulum was the fifth person to win the award since 1973.

The event had four main categories: The lifetime achievement award, worthy ambassador award, most distinguished alumnus of the year 2020 and alumnus of the year 2020. There were also honorary awards for certain prominent Nigerians.

While speaking afterwards, Gov. Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun state and Prof. Isaac Adewole both commended Governor Zulum for the awards he received and his quality leadership in Borno State.

Governor Zulum in his acknowledgment speech said: “I personally see this award as a challenge. Let me assure you that this will further encourage me to do more,.

He also went on to express his appreciation for his lecturers who impacted his life while he was a student at the University of Ibadan and pledged to strengthen the relationship between the University of Ibadan and the University of Maiduguri.
Other notable figures at the ceremony include: former Governor Kashim Shettima, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume and Senator Abubakar Kyari, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly; Abdulkarim Lawan, Commissioner of Agriculture, Engr. Bukar Talba, The Acting Vice chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Adebola Babatunde Ekanola and Special Adviser to Governor Zulum on Protocol, Alhaji Ahmed Sanda.
Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazak of Kwara State also received a posthumous award on behalf of his late father.
