Workers’ Day: Oyo PDP Describes Civil Servants as Heroes, Calls for Continued Support

The Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described civil servants in the state as heroes of the modern Oyo State being engineered by Governor ‘Seyi Makinde.

The ruling PDP, while also acknowledging the importance of a vibrant and supportive workforce, charged the Oyo State workers to continue to cooperate and remain resolute in their support for the present government in the state.

The Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Akeem Olatunji, in a press statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan on May 1st on behalf of the party to commemorate the International Workers Day, noted that it was the support and cooperation of the Oyo State civil servants that culminated into the landslide achievements of the ‘Seyi Makinde-led PDP administration.

Olatunji disclosed that this year’s theme for the celebration tagged: “Workers Rights and Socio-Economic Justice” was aptly captured as it bears a reminder to the significant role civil servants play in state and nation building.

Meanwhile, the International Labour Day which is celebrated across the globe on May 1st is also known as May Day or Worker’s Day, and it is observed to raise awareness and educate people about the importance and rights of workers across different parts of the world.

According to the ruling party in Oyo State, ‘Seyi Makinde means serious business from the word go, which was why his commitment and passion for the welfare and wellbeing of workers in the state has recorded tremendous success such that it has become a reference point among other states of the federation.

The party assured that the Governor Makinde-led PDP government will continue to prioritise the socio-economic wellbeing of workers in the state as it forms part of the party’s core focal point of developing the state further.

Celebrating with workers in both public and private sectors, the ruling party particularly expressed gratitude to the various labour unions in the state under the overall leadership of both the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), over what was described as a reciprocating support for a deserving government of Governor Makinde.

“The occasion of this year 2023 International Workers’ Day calls for special celebration particularly in Oyo State. This is so because of the cordial relationship between the state government and workers across the state.

“If it was possible to present a trophy to Oyo State workers to celebrate you for the continuous show of love and support for the PDP led administration in the state, we would have done so but the unwavering commitment and passion of our overall leader and governor of the state, ‘Seyi Makinde, towards an improved standard of living and quality of life of all civil servants in the state has outweighed any other form of appreciation.

“When our God-sent man and friend of the masses started out with prompt payment of workers salaries on or before 25th of each month, our detractors and naysayers thought it was a fluke and unsustainable because it was the same office they held for eight years with scary backlog of workers meritorious salaries running into several months.

“When the man now nicknamed Mr ‘talk and do’ started payment of gratuities and pension, and also clearing backlog of pension arrears, they became caught up in awe of their own disbelief wondering how Makinde is performing what they referred to as magic.

“But we know that it only takes a man with the humility to serve and courage to lead as Governor Makinde to achieve such feat in the face of economic downturn where other states grappled for breathe. Your commitment to and support for the present government under Governor Makinde is duly acknowledged and we can assure you this relationship can only grow stronger.

“We can not talk about peace if there’s no economic fairness and justice which is why this year’s theme for the celebration succinctly captured the very essence of our continuous partnership in progress as we continue to chart a new course for an even distribution of public wealth, sustained delivery of good governance, as well as economic prosperity for our dear pacesetters’ state,” Olatunji stated.
