The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar earlier on Wednesday held a closed-door meeting with governors of the party, to further strategise on how to win majority votes in 2023.
According to reports, the meeting was convened following the declaration of Bola Tinubu as the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the 2023 presidential election.
Asiwaju Tinubu was announced to have defeated 13 other candidates with a total of 1271 votes, to emerge the winner of the APC presidential primary.
Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State disclosed that the meeting in Abuja was more of consultative meeting.
“On behalf of my colleagues, the governors, let me commend the leadership of the party and members of our party for a very successful national convention.
“The national chairman along with the candidate came to thank the governors for their roles at the convention.
“We talked about cooperation and collaboration in prosecuting a very successful electioneering campaign that will result in victories for the PDP at various elections from the State House of Assembly, national election, governorship and the presidential election come February 2023.
“It is more of a consultative meeting on matters concerning the way forward,” Mr Tambuwal said.
On the running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Mr Tambuwal said: “It is part of the consultation, it is ongoing and governors are also being consulted on that,” Tambuwal said.
Present at the meeting include Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri; Bauchi Governor, Bala Muhammed; Governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
Meanwhile, the PDP presidential candidate stated on his verified Facebook page that as a result of the meeting, the seeds of reconciliation and unity are already being planted in the party.
According to Atiku Abubakar, the meeting with Wike, Makinde, Ortom and Ugwuanyi preceded his meeting with other members of the PDP Governors Forum at his Abuja residence.
“Governor Nyesom Wike, Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi came calling on a courtesy visit before my meeting with the PDP Governors Forum. Slowly but surely, the seeds of unity are being planted in our party” – Atiku.
It was however gathered that the closed door meeting has to do with deliberate moves, to close ranks and put all differences within the PDP aside.
