Court Restrains Oyo Assembly From Impeaching Deputy Governor

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has restrained the Oyo State House of Assembly from impeaching the Deputy Governor of the state, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan.

The court, presided by Justice Ladiran Akintola stopped any removal process the state assembly may want to initiate.

Consequently, a removal process cannot be initiated, until the court decides.

The order was given on Wednesday when the case came up at Court 7 of the State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan.

According to the court, the status-quo must be maintained pending the hearing of the application for interlocutory injunctions before it.

Director of Legal Services, Olabanji represented the assembly while Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, led Olaniyan’s legal team.

Recall that the case which came up on Tuesday was adjourned till Wednesday due to the absence of the legal counsel to the Oyo State House of Assembly, the Speaker of the House and Clerk.

Olaniyan had dragged the parties to court to seek an injunction to stop what he described as “faulty process” of his impeachment.

Meanwhile, the court has adjourned the matter to Tuesday, July 5, 2022 for continuation of hearing.

It was gathered that the adjournment is to allow the assembly file its reply to that of Olaniyan.
