7 Burnt to Death, 18 Injured as Vehicles Collide on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

No fewer than seven (7) people were reportedly burnt to death on Thursday morning in an accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, while eighteen (18) others sustained varying degrees of injuries from the fatal auto crash.

Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Public Education Officer for Sector Commander FRSC Ogun Sector Command, Chief Route Commander Florence Okpe, said the accident involved two vehicles along Sapade bridge.

“The suspected causes of the crash were excessive speed and route violation on the part of the Sienna bus, which was going against traffic and collided with the Mazda bus, resulting in a fire outbreak,” Chief Route Commander Okpe further explained in a statement made available to newsmen.

“A total of 27 people were involved in the accident, including 25 male adults, two female adults, and one female child.

“The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere and Idera Hospital Sagamu for medical attention,”

“However, seven persons were burnt beyond recognition, and their bodies were deposited at FOS MORGUE IPARA.” He said.

The FRSC Ogun Sector Command, CC AHMED UMAR, cautioned motorists on the dangers of route violation and excessive speed, as confirmed by Chief Route Commander Okpe.

“Human lives are important, therefore motorists are advised to drive cautiously and consider other road users,” she emphasized.

She also expressed condolences to the victims’ families and advised them to contact FRSC Ogere for more information about the crash.

“It is a tragic incident that highlights the need for road safety awareness and responsible driving to prevent such accidents in the future,” said Chief Route Commander Florence Okpe, ending the statement.
