Ibadan Tragedy: Mogaji Ile Nla Calls for Collective Action Against Poverty

PUBLIC STATEMENT BY OLOYE OLAJUWON ENITAN SUBAIR-ADELOKUN,
MOGAJI OF ILE NLA, IBADAN LAND,
ON BEHALF OF THE SUBAIR-ADELOKUN FOUNDATION

It is with a heavy heart that I address the tragic incident that occurred during a free feeding Christmas event in Ibadan, where over 30 innocent children lost their lives. This devastating loss is a glaring reminder of the depth of poverty and lack of basic amenities that have crippled our society.

This tragedy exposes the harsh reality faced by the underserved and underprivileged in our communities. The families who have lost their children are not the wealthy, the middle class, or those in positions of power, but the common masses—the very backbone of our society. Poverty, in its many forms, is the greatest enemy to the growth and development of our communities.

At The Subair-Adelokun Foundation, we recognize that this unfortunate incident reflects a broader systemic failure. It is a call to action for all of us to commit to empowering the next generation from underserved communities, providing them with the opportunities and resources needed to thrive.

This heartbreaking event underscores the urgent need for community revitalization and sustainable development. We must all take a stand against the weaponization of poverty—a tool that has rendered our people vulnerable and easily controlled by mere promises of basic necessities. True empowerment goes beyond feeding; it must address the poverty of the mind, body, and spirit.

To the grieving families, we extend our deepest condolences. Your pain is our pain, and we stand with you in this dark moment. This is not just your loss but a collective tragedy that we must ensure never happens again.

Let us come together to build a society where no child’s life is endangered in the pursuit of basic sustenance. The time for action is now, and it begins with each of us taking responsibility for the well-being of our communities.
