A prominent figure in Oyo State’s politics, Alhaji Adebisi Olopoeyan has warned against being described as a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying he does not belong to the party.
Speaking in a WhatsApp group, the Ibadan-born political heavyweight said he has not yet decided which party he will align with after parting ways with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
Olopoeyan’s clarification follows a wave of public reactions to viral photos showing him in the United Kingdom with top members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The pictures, which surfaced online over the weekend, featured him alongside the former First Lady of Oyo State, Chief (Mrs) Florence Ajimobi, and former APC governorship candidate, Senator Teslim Folarin, among others.
The politician, who made a stopover in the UK after a recent trip to the United States, said the meeting was purely social and should not be interpreted as a political move.
“Meeting with APC chieftains doesn’t mean I am joining the APC, as of now, I am not in any political party, but soon, my decision will be made known,” Olopoeyan stated.
He maintained that it was misleading to keep referring to him as a PDP chieftain.
“Addressing me as a PDP chieftain doesn’t count anymore,” he said firmly, adding that when the time comes, his next political direction will be made public.
