Insecurity: Ibadan Mogajis calls for inclusion into LG Council, Security Structure

….says Security in Ibadan Could be Better Coordinated if Mogajis are Involved

The Association of Mogajis of Ibadaland has called on the Seyi Makinde-led administration of Oyo state to incorporate its members into the Ibadanland local government council in order to enhance crime-fighting in the state.

The Association made this call at a press conference tagged “violent security crisis in Ibadanland” which was held on Thursday at the Mapo Hall, Ibadan.

A press statement released after the conference which was made public via the Twitter handle of one of the association member; Mogaji Ile Nla, Olajuwon Adelokun (@Hrh_Olajuwon) stated that the Mogajis are closer to the people and have different strategies to fight and reduce crimes and other social vices to the barest minimum.

The association subsequently enjoined the state government to explore the possibility of inculcating the Family heads and Mogajis into the security structure just like Bobakeyes in Ijebuland, the white cap chiefs in Lagos and the Emeses in Ile Ife.

Also, the association opined that the current violent security crisis in Ibadanland can be managed and reduced if a working synergy existed between the state government and the association.

The Mogajis said, “The current violent security crisis in Ibadanland can be managed and reduced to the barest minimum by the Mogajis and Baales with the assistant of the Oyo State Government.”

The association also noted that youths who engage in criminal acts in the localities are jobless and or under-engaged.

“Most of the youths involved in the current crisis are jobless and unengaged. Most of them spend their time drinking strong alcohol and smoking Indian hemp”

The statement in parts: “Due to the fact that the youths are known to the Mogajis, and that they still respect them as their family head, they are capable of helping in resettling these youths and engaging them in various ways. The Mogajis will however need the support of the Oyo State Government to achieve this feat.

“Ibadanland is getting larger and bigger on daily basis, hence the need for close engagement from the grassroots level. Training towards the exalted position of the Olubadan starts from the position of Mogaji.”
“The security role of the Mogaji within his family, he will need an experience for a higher challenge in the future, and this can only be gathered through attendance of traditional Council meetings at various levels.”

” We, therefore, urge the Oyo State House of Assembly as well as the Oyo State Government to come up with a law, that will make Mogajis and Olubadan Traditional Chiefs, Traditional Council members of all Ibadanland Local Government.”

The Association stated that although the security of lives and properties is everybody’s business, the Mogajis are better equipped to achieve this feat in Ibadanland.

“The work of peace and security is the duty of everyone, but it could be better coordinated in Ibadanland if our Mogajis are properly involved.”
