On Friday, the Oyo State Government disbursed ₦12 billion to its workforce, fulfilling Governor Seyi Makinde’s pledge to increase the minimum wage to ₦80,000 effective from January 1, 2025.
According to the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, this adjustment significantly impacts various salary grades. Workers on Grade Levels I to VI now receive an additional ₦50,000, while those on Grade Level 17 see their salaries increase by over ₦180,000.
The welfare enhancements extend to pensioners as well. This month, a minimum pension of ₦25,000 has been set, alongside a 33 percent increment for more than 40,000 retirees.
Additionally, to alleviate financial stress, the state has eliminated the ₦4,000 fee for retirement forms. This change is expected to return nearly ₦20 million to approximately 4,500 workers nearing retirement.
