The Oyo State government has reverted to the use of the Tribid system for powering street lights in the state after using diesel power previously.
According to the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon Seun Ashamu, the LightUp Oyo project will now return to the Tribid system, which included a grid, inverter, and gas generator for support as agreed with the developer, to make it more accessible, reliable, and efficient throughout the state.
He added that the main fuse, which draws power from diesel, was installed specifically to carry out a priority of the Governor ‘Seyi Makinde-led administration to turn on the lights to lower crime rates throughout the state and create a more hospitable environment.
He said, “When we conceived the Light-Up Oyo project it was scoped to be powered using a Tribrid energy source of the grid, inverter, and gas support.
“While we took delivery of the LED fittings and cables arrived; unfortunately, COVID-19 caused delays in the arrival of other key components to be used for the project. We had a decision to take: delay the entire project or derive immediate value by putting the lights on using in-country diesel engines.
“In the interest of residents of Oyo State, we decided on the latter and the people of the state felt the impact of our 21st-century public lighting network; available data showed a reduction in crime rates and the beginnings of a nighttime business economy.
“With supply chains now open, the transition to the initially scoped infrastructure has commenced with the installation of gas engines.
“As our gas installations continue please bear with us as we will try to minimise unavoidable fluctuations in the availability of the public lighting network.
“Let me add two things: (i) the Oyo State Government did not pay extra for the diesel and (ii) the IPP which is in its final stages will energise about half of the 300km public lighting infrastructure.
“Led by HE ‘Seyi Makinde, we planned and are on the road to sustainable development in our dear state and we will continue to take decisions we believe are in the best short, medium, and long term interest of the residents of Oyo State”, he explained.
