Engr Seyi Makinde, The executive governor of Oyo State, has communicated with the Oyo state house of assembly wanting approval for the extension of the tenures of all Local Government and Local Council Development Areas (LG/LCDAs) by 3 months.
The house acknowledged this on Monday 14th December 2020 during its plenary session.
Remember when the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) had earlier declared openly that it will publish a timetable and guidelines for local government election by January 2021.
The governor stated his decision to extend the tenure of the council chairmen was a preventive approach against a vacuum in the local government administration between the timetable release date and the actual election date.
The existing caretaker chairmen tenures in all 33 and 35 local governments and LCDAs officially comes to an end on 19th December 2020.
Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin, The Speaker, in his precis comment said that the house will collaborate with the house committee on local and chieftaincy matters before approving the governor’s request.
Ogundoyin however emphasized that the since the existence of a vacuum will not be permissible in local government administration, the house will take into cognizance the request for tenure extension on Friday 18th December 2020.
