The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Oyo State has apprehended three individuals for vandalizing street light cables owned by the state government. The incident took place in the Ile Titun area of Ibadan. The suspects have been identified as Aliu Musa, a 29-year-old Togolese national, Joseph Michael, a 25-year-old from Anambra State, and Joseph Godwin Lakur, a 26-year-old from Plateau State.
According to NSCDC spokesperson Oyindamola Okuneye, the suspects were caught at the scene of the vandalism on July 28 at around 2 am. They admitted to cutting the street light cable with a saw and selling it for N42,000 before being apprehended during their second attempt. An investigation is currently underway to apprehend their accomplice and the buyer of the stolen cable.
In a separate incident, the NSCDC also arrested a suspect named AnuOluwapo Opeyemi for stealing a tricycle from the Oje area of Ibadan. The suspect then took the tricycle to Iseyin town in Oke Ogun. However, the tricycle was tracked and recovered on the same day. Opeyemi had damaged some parts of the tricycle before driving it away from where it was stolen.
During an interview, Opeyemi expressed remorse for his actions and regretted bringing shame upon his family. He explained that he resorted to theft because he had no means of survival. Opeyemi had learned the vocation of aluminum windows in Abuja but did not have enough money to establish his own business in Ibadan. He also faced discrimination from local business owners who believed he was from the northern part of Nigeria. Opeyemi blamed his actions on desperation and claimed that he spotted the unlocked tricycle at a hotel and decided to steal it.
The suspect confessed to smoking marijuana since 2015 and pleaded with the government to provide him with a job. He promised to stop using drugs and engaging in criminal activities if given the opportunity.
