The Oyo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced a change in the schedule for its primary elections. The primary, which is for all chairmanship and councilorship aspirants who have been cleared to participate in the exercise, was initially planned for Thursday. However, it will now take place on Friday (August 25) and Monday (August 28).
The decision to reschedule the primary was made due to the high number of party members expressing interest in representing the Oyo APC in the local government council election. The election is set to take place in April next year, as determined by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC).
In a statement released in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo state, the Publicity Secretary of Oyo APC, Olawale Sadare, emphasized the party’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and credible primary election. The rescheduling of the primary was deemed necessary to leave no stone unturned in achieving this goal.
“The schedule of the party primary will now be spit into two and we have picked this Friday to conduct the exercise in all the Wards and LGAs in both Oyo Central and Oyo North Senatorial districts while the turn of the 99 Wards and nine local government councils in Oyo South will be Monday next week.
“Reports submitted by the screening committees established that we have competent aspirants in all the 351 Wards and 33 LGAs as this indicates that APC remains the most popular party in the state.
“As earlier announced, we are adopting Direct Primary option to accommodate all registered party members in the decision to field candidates and there shall be no compromise.
“On the day of the primary, delegates are expected to gather at the designated venue in each Ward and undertake accreditation process which shall be followed by headcount of delegates found on the queue behind each aspirant or their recognized agent whole the aspirant with the simple majority would be declared the winner by the relevant official deployed for the exercise by the party.” The statement concluded.
