The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Oyo State Command paraded several Telecommunications cable vandals at their Command Headquarters at Agodi, Ibadan yesterday.
The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Iskilu Akinsanya told journalists that one of the NSCDC’s duties is to protect Federal Government property and apprehend any criminals destroying/stealing them.
He added that the cable vandals were arrested along U.I Road in Bodija around 2:15 am while they were trying to steal cables. He also said that the detained suspects later led the patrol team to where they store their ill-gotten loot and were able to arrest more members of the gang there.
“The first three suspects were arrested with the vandalized cables along U.I Road at Bodija Market, they later led the patrol team to where they used to keep their looted vandalized products, where the two others were eventually arrested at the store.”
“I’m appealing to the good citizens of the State to always call the attention of security operatives whenever they notice any strange movements or occurrence in their various environments, because failure to do so can be dangerous, for instance if our electricity cables are vandalized we are the one that will suffer for it, so I urge the members of the public to always say something whenever they see something.”
The apprehended suspects have since been identified as: 31 year-old Shittu Ope, 22 year-old Olawuyi Timilehin, 21 year-old Ajibade Segun, 20 year-old Lawal Toheeb, and the elder statesman of the gang; 38 year-old Suraju Muraina.
Despite the recovered rolls of telecommunications cable from the suspects, some have denied any involvement in the theft but will have their day in court to prove their innocence.
