The Oyo State Government has initiated the payment of bursary awards to 2,950 students from the state who are currently enrolled in Law Schools, Medical Schools, Aviation Schools, and final-year programs at universities and polytechnics nationwide.
The beneficiaries were selected from a pool of 3,000 applicants who met the eligibility criteria for the award.
Victor Olojede, the Senior Special Assistant on Students’ Affairs to Governor Seyi Makinde, confirmed the development in a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, in Ibadan. Olojede highlighted that Governor Makinde had approved a total of N554,989,000 for the bursary, emphasizing the governor’s commitment to supporting students.
“We are officially commencing the payment of bursary awards to final-year students in polytechnics, universities, Nigerian Law School, Aviation Schools, and Medical and Clinical Schools,” Olojede stated. He explained that the selection process, which began in March 2024, involved rigorous screening, resulting in 2,950 qualified beneficiaries. Some applicants were disqualified for failing to meet the set criteria.
Of the beneficiaries, 105 are medical and clinical students, four are maritime and aviation students, and the remainder are final-year students in polytechnics and universities. Olojede praised Governor Makinde for reviving the bursary program, which had been neglected by previous administrations.
Olawale Atilola, Chairman of the State Scholarship Board, described the bursary as a testament to Makinde’s investment in education. He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, particularly for educational expenses such as purchasing books.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the financial support. Yetunde Ayoola, one of the recipients, shared that the bursary would significantly ease her financial burden, as she had previously relied solely on her parents for support. Similarly, Akanbi Mayowa, another beneficiary, noted that the bursary would help cover his final-year school fees, reducing his reliance on menial jobs and parental assistance.
A Medicine and Surgery student at the University of Ibadan also lauded the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful, especially for covering final-year and induction fees.
