Press Statement by Mottainai Recycling Ltd Regarding the Recently Concluded Verification Exercise of PSPs in Oyo State

Mottainai Recycling Ltd worked with the Oyo State Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) to verify PSPs that have been operating in Oyo State and any new companies that applied to work in the waste management sector in Oyo State.

So far, 169 waste collectors, who have shown that they have some level of capacity, have been verified and are now known as Mottainai Accredited Franchisees (MAFs). Altogether, these waste collectors have 21 Compactors, 3 Roro Trucks, 175 Open Trucks, and no (zero) Skip Trucks.

On the other hand, Oyo State has 8 compactors.

As can be seen, this operational capacity is far below what is required to keep the state clean. By our estimation, each of the 350 wards in Oyo State needs one compactor for a super-efficient waste management system. Therefore, post verification, it is very clear that the biggest problem with waste management in Oyo State is operational incapacity.

This is where Mottainai Recycling Ltd comes in. Already, we have 12 Compactors, about 40% of the total capacity in Oyo State, in our fleet. Additionally, we have one Skip Truck and one Working Floor Trailer.

But we are not stopping here. Working with the Oyo State Government, we plan to empower Mottainai Accredited Franchisees (MAFs) with operational trucks. We are confident that with the right tools, the new and existing MAFs will achieve greater efficiency.

In the meantime, all former PSPs, now MAFs, have been mandated to clean up Oyo State. Some of them have been assigned to return to their former slots, while others have been assigned new slots. But, as stated above, this operational capacity is not enough. This is why when people call us, they experience 3-7 days of wait time before their waste is picked up.

In the coming weeks, we hope to reduce and finally eliminate these wait times as we achieve a more efficient waste management system in Oyo State.

Let us also use the opportunity to mention that with the new system in place, residents and commercial waste creators/generators in Oyo State are not permitted to make cash payments to any MAF. All payments are made through bank transfer, Point of Sale (POS) or Direct Deposit in the banking hall.

Also, all former residential pick-up tariffs will be maintained with no increase whatsoever.

Conclusively, as the waste management consultants of Oyo State, Mottainai Recycling Ltd remains committed to maintaining a clean environment. The verification and accreditation of waste collectors in Oyo State is a continuous process.

Any companies with the necessary capacity are free to approach Mottainai Recycling Ltd or OYOWMA to request verification and accreditation. Also, all complaints and requests for waste evacuation should be routed through our call centre. Please call 0700 080 0700 or WhatsApp 08181900004.
