Osun Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Ojo on Monday adjourned the trial of the owner of Hilton hotel, Ile-Ife, Dr Rahmon Adedoyin, and its six staff over the alleged murder and interference with the corpse of a Master’s Student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Timothy Adegoke.
The adjournment was hinged on arguments over the health condition of the second defendant, Magdalene Chiefuna, who was coughing intermittently and slumped while the counsel from the Ministry of Justice and the defendants’ counsel were arguing the propriety of a human rights activist, Femi Falana, SAN taking over the prosecution.
Justice Ojo gave a short adjournment so that the second defendant could be attended to.
Upon resumption, Falana was said to have addressed the court, insisting the hearing of the case must continue but the judge ruled for adjournment when the defence counsel could not produce witnesses for their clients.
According to reports, the court will now hear the case from May 25th to 31st.
While addressing pressmen after the court session, Fálàna SAN noted that his legal team is not taking over the case but leading the Osun state police in its prosecution. He said the adjournment is the court’s agreement and he believes the Judge in charge will ensure justice prevails.
Meanwhile, many Nigerians have taken to the social media to criticise the executive treatment given Adedoyin who arrived in a long bus unhandcuffed as against the Black Maria used to convey offenders. It was also gathered that part of the reasons for the adjournment was the unpreparedness for defense by Adedoyin and others.
