UI Management Reacts to Viral Video of Professor Ordering Security to Arrest Female Skater, Says Skating is Illegal on Campus Roads

The management of the University of Ibadan has responded to a viral video of one of its staff, Prof. Joseph Anthony Origbomisan Woods ordering the school security to arrest a lady using a skateboard on campus.

According to the statement signed by the Registrar of the institution, Mrs. Olubunmi Faluyi, the female skater was not in any way mishandled by the lecturer who had accused her of endangering lives on the university road.

The statement reads: “The fact of the situation was that Prof. J. A. O Woods who is a distinguished professor of Chemistry and the immediate focal officer of SERVICOM on the campus saw the lady and another male counterpart skating along Oduduwa Road, the busiest road on campus.

“Prof. Woods had stopped the skaters and requested that they should be taken to the campus security office, but that they continued arguing with him”, it added.

The University management insisted that it was illegal to skate on major roads, hence the apprehension by the professor.

“In general, skating on major roads is illegal and unsafe worldwide. It is only allowed on walkways and designated parks and not on highways.

“The action taken by the professor was to protect the lives of the skaters and other road users.

“Management, therefore, condemned the way the story is being posted on social media and unkind comments made.

“Posting the video on social media was a pure act of mischief”, it added.

In the meantime, the management has warned learners and skaters to desist from major roads during peak periods.
