ASUU Strike: UI VC Pleads with JAC to Permit Provision of Essential Services

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor K. O. Adebowale, FAS, mni has called on the leadership of the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU, to allow the provision of essential services during the ongoing strike action within the university, owing to the large number of the university workforce resident on campus.

This appeal became necessary after a pupil of the Staff School, was knocked down by a reversing vehicle on Monday, 21st March, 2022.

It was gathered that the child was immediately rushed to the University Health Services, Jaja Clinic but was not attended to because the clinic was under the lock and key of the JAC.

She was taken to UCH but the Resident doctors were on strike and she was referred to another hospital from where she was again referred to a private hospital.

Through the intervention of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebowale, the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of UCH today, assigned a consultant to the child and she is now receiving attention at the UCH. Her condition is stable and she is responding to treatment.

The Vice Chancellor noted the severe pains the little girl must have gone through, which may have been ameliorated if she had been able to receive immediate medical first aid at the Jaja Clinic.

The VC therefore appealed to the leadership of the JAC, to always exempt the UHS from total close down, in order for it to provide palliative care in emergencies, considering that a very large proportion of the workforce reside on campus.

He further appealed to all car users to be extra careful and exercise caution especially within the premises of the Staff School as they drive their vehicles, as any of the children may be crossing the road or they may be behind the cars unknown to the drivers.
