Residents and road users in the Olodo area of Ibadan were thrilled on Tuesday as the Oyo State government fulfilled its promise to open a section of the Olodo bridge under construction to pedestrians by April 30, 2024.
The bridge had been devastated by flooding following torrential rain on July 23, 2023, causing anguish for residents and road users. Governor Seyi Makinde had promised during a recent inspection to make a section of the bridge accessible to pedestrians by April 30, with motorists to follow by May 30, 2024.
The State Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Prof. Daud Sangodoyin, appealed to residents and road users to exercise caution and follow construction workers’ directives while using the bridge, as work is still ongoing.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to opening the section of the bridge to other road users by May 22, 2024.
As he stated, “His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has directed that this bridge be completed and used by our people, and I am delighted today that we have opened the bridge for pedestrians. What’s next for us is to complete the job and open it for vehicular movement. I can promise you that before May 22, 2024, we will open the first half of the bridge for vehicular movement and pedestrians.”
A resident, Lady Evangelist Elizabeth Olalowo, described the development as a great relief for the area’s residents and expressed gratitude to the state government for responding promptly to the people’s cries.
