Following the reopening of the erstwhile closed Shasha market, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has instructed the Commissioner for Local Governments to begin immediate cleaning of the market adding that whatever palliative can be provided by the government will be given immediately to facilitate the immediate commencement of trading activities in the market.
The Governor said this during a peace meeting with leaders of the Hausa and Yoruba communities in Shasha earlier today.
The Governor who pleaded with both parties to settle things amicably noted that he decided to open the market for economic reasons and the peculiarities in the state.
He said, “When my fellow governors visited and we all came to Shasha, both to the Seriki and the Baale’s place and while we were walking around, I saw on the faces of the people that they were not happy with the closure of the market which hindered them from going about their daily activities.
If you remember, even during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, I decided not to shut our market places because I know and I also explained to the leadership of the country at the national level that in Oyo state, we have people that live on daily proceeds made from their businesses.
So, for economic consideration and the peculiarities here in Oyo State, I have heard your arguments and we are reopening the Shasha market right away.”
He also instructed the Commissioner for Works to erect solar street lights in the market to ensure that the environment is well lit.
He finally sued for peace among the traders adding that the Iroko market will remain shut as it has been established to be one of the causes of the problem in the Shasha market and its environs. He also pledged to visit the market to assess the situation of things, once trading activities commence.
He said, “From your response here, we’ve been able to establish that one of the main cause of the problem is the people that started the market at Iroko so Iroko market will remain closed.
My final plea to both communities is that your previous amicable relationship should be restored and wherever you need the support of the government, we are here to provide you with every help you need to ensure that peace returns to the market and Shasha community.
I will also visit the market once trading activities commence to assess the situation of things.”
