Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: Commuters Flee as Robbers Take Over Kara Long Bridge

A notorious gang of armed Robbers on Tuesday allegedly attacked commuters on Kara Bridge along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident occured as early as 5.30am when residents in the area were rushing to beat the regular gridlock on the long bridge, as a result of the ongoing construction work by Julius Berger at Kara and Otedola bridges.

There have been calls on Julius Berger to segment the construction work to ease free flow of traffic but for months, without notice or announcement in the media, they narrow the expressway or block a section of it, causing traffic jam.

According to reports, the robbers operated freely, dispossessing commuters of their valuables such as computers, bags, cash, wristwatches.

A reporter, who was caught up in the chaos, observed that while some braved it and carried their bags to run towards Lagos, some ran leaving their car engine running, without their shoes or any of their belongings.

Others expecting the worst because they couldn’t run out of shock or ill health, sat down resignedly by the bridge.

The hooded bandits also herded some people out of sight, though some said they escaped, even reporting their ordeal to the police.

Meanwhile, the victims have appealed to the government that the bad portion at Kara be repaired.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Warewa Police Division, Fatai Ogunsanya, promised to beef up security on the long bridge.

Similarly, the Ogun State Police Command has debunked reports that bandits abducted 20 persons at Kara Bridge in Ifo Council of the state.

The “wicked rumour”, as the police called it, was credited to a pastor, who claimed that 20 persons were abducted at the bridge, and that the gunmen were targeting worshippers at the Redeemed Camp, where members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) worship.
