Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday, unveiled the Prince Olaide Akinremi Jagaban Government Reserved Area to immortalise the late All Progressives Congress chieftain, who represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency from 2019 until his death on July 10, 2024.
Makinde, represented by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal at the unveiling ceremony held along Dominion University Road, Samonda, Ibadan, also announced that the ongoing reconstruction of the UI-Samonda Road linking Sango/Poly Road would soon be completed.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, in Ibadan, the state capital.
Governor Makinde stressed that naming the GRA after Akinremi was not politically motivated, but rather a tribute to the late lawmaker’s outstanding contributions to his constituency and Oyo State at large. He assured that the project would be completed to a high standard, with all necessary infrastructure and facilities already in place.
“Today’s event is very significant. I was with the governor in July 2024 when he received the sad news of Jagaban’s passing from Abuja. He immediately said Ibadanland had lost a gem.
From that moment, we began considering how best to immortalise him. The governor believes that true immortalisation is not about giving money or material things but about creating something enduring. That was when he decided to dedicate this parcel of land in Samonda for a housing estate in Jagaban’s honour.
I am pleased that the governor’s promise has come to fruition today. Everything said about Jagaban reflects that he lived a purposeful life, and this is a reminder that our deeds live on after us,” Lawal said.
He added that the governor has committed to fixing the roads linking the estate to Sango, with work already ongoing.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Oluseun Olufade, praised Governor Makinde for honouring a distinguished son of Ibadan North and urged other public office holders to take lessons from the gesture.
The Chairman of the Day, High Chief Akinade Fijabi, also commended the governor for his infrastructural achievements and his inclusive governance style, which cuts across political divides.
Speaking on behalf of the Akinremi family, Abideen Akinremi expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for the support extended to the family since the lawmaker’s death, pledging that the family would always remember the gesture
