Mottainai Recycling carried out a sensitisation drive to Iseyin Town on the 22nd of July 2023. The initiative aimed to spark behavioural changes, raise awareness, and promote responsible waste management practices. Led by a team of 20 Mottainai Recycling Team including ambassadors, the event left an indelible mark on the community, redefining attitudes towards waste disposal and advocating for a cleaner and greener Iseyin.
The day’s proceedings commenced at AFRAS RADIO STATION, where the Chief Sustainability Officer at Mottainai Recycling, Miss Deborah Fadeyi discussed the urgent need for behavioural change. She shed light on the significance of paying for waste services, emphasising the necessity for sincere collaboration between the citizens and the government.
Commending the efforts of the Iseyin people in maintaining a waste-free median, she urged the community to continue supporting the initiative for a better Iseyin Town. Miss Fadeyi delved into the various ways waste could be transformed into wealth through recycling and unveiled plans for the delivery of smart recycling hubs across Iseyin Town. These hubs aim to empower women and youths in the waste management value chain.
The event continued at the King’s Palace, where a stakeholder management meeting took place. Market executives and local government representatives gathered to embrace proper waste management habits. The discussion revolved around regular waste evacuation at the market square and throughout Iseyin Town. To ensure consistent funding for waste collection services, the implementation of a fixed monthly waste payment system through the local government was recommended. Deliberations also included facilitating fund collection before evacuation days, necessitating proper information dissemination and awareness creation among residents. Local Government Chairman Honourable Abilawon Osuolale Mufutau, Leader of the House Iseyin LG Honourable Market Women leaders, Youth Leaders, Secretary, Councillor for Health and Environment Honourable Olasunkanmi Nurudeen Opeyemi, Member Committee of Environment Honourable Onatunji Ibraheem and Councilor for Works Honourable Olayiwole Simeon Oluwasegun, Councillor for Education Honourable Sehu Waheed Abiodun and Market leaders were all in attendance.
Mottainai Recycling also visited Oja Oba market after the stakeholders’ meeting where they engaged with the market people with representatives from the Local Government on proper waste disposal and recycling. Wuraola Adeyemi, the Head of Iseyin Operations, addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of timely payments for waste services. He emphasised that waste management is a public utility that must be paid for appropriately, rejecting the practice of collecting insufficient fees. “Paying the right price ensures continuous service delivery,” he asserted, “public utility is not charity.”
As Iseyin Town sets its sights on a greener future, the community’s dedication and collaborative spirit will pave the way for a cleaner and more sustainable tomorrow. The community’s efforts will leave a lasting mark on Oyo State’s history, making Iseyin a model of environmental excellence for other communities to emulate.
