NANS Protest Over Rising Rape Cases, Gender-Based Violence in Oyo State

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS has protested the gruesome murder of Barakat Bello, a student of the Federal College of Animal, Health and Production Technology, and others in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The President, Comrade Danielson Bamidele Akpan, while speaking on behalf of all stakeholders of the union, at the Governor’s office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, expressed dissatisfaction at the violence and insecurity, particularly targeted at the Nigerian students in the state and nation.

In the position paper delivered to the Oyo State Government, Akpan reiterated that “NANS would not tolerate any act by persons within or outside campuses that violates the sanctity of the life of a citizen or ends abruptly the life of any student.” The NANS President also decries and condemns anyone who encourages or justifies the act of sexual molestation.

While addressing the group, the Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Hon. Seun Fakorede who spoke on behalf of the Oyo State Government, Engr. Seyi Makinde welcomed the executives of the National Association of Nigerian Students. He condemned the dastardly killing of Barakat and others and reassured the group that the state government will leave no stone unturned to bring the culprits to book.

Fakorede commended the peaceful protest of the students and stated that the state government is working to ensure that the security apparatus is in place to make sure that justice is served. He stated that work is in progress to enact laws to address rape cases.
