The Oyo State House of Assembly has lauded the state’s Executive Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for his efforts in ensuring the installation of a stable power supply across the State Secretariat and its surrounding areas.
This commendation followed a motion presented by Hon. Bamidele Adeola, the lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju State Constituency.
The motion, titled “Need for Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to Build Sustainable Customer Service Relationships for Seamless Operations and Steady Electricity Supply in the State,” highlighted that sustainable electricity supply is a critical driver of economic progress. It emphasised that the government and policymakers must invest in power generation, grid expansion, and renewable energy sources to ensure long-term economic development.
Hon. Adeola described Governor Makinde’s efforts as a renewed hope for achieving stable power supply across the state in the near future.
“This cornerstone of economic development through renewable energy sources is the guiding philosophy of Governor Seyi Makinde’s Government towards achieving steady power supply in Oyo State.”
“The steady supply we are enjoying presently in the State Secretariat and its environs is a clear testimony to a journey of stable power supply across the State in no distance time.”
Hon. Adeola stressed the importance of IBEDC emulating and complementing the government’s efforts by focusing on renewable energy sources for its valued customers.
He also noted the lack of adequate information on some of IBEDC’s major activities that directly impact customers, such as electricity billing, power rationing, disconnections, meter availability and distribution, and the provision and installation of transformers, among other services.
“The communication gap has led to many unresolved issues and avoidable fracas between IBEDC and its customers on estimated billing, non-availability of pre-paid metres for interested customers, and the installation of transformers single-handedly purchased by individuals or communities, which is supposed to be the responsibility of IBEDC,” the motion stated.
The House has directed its Standing Committee on Energy to invite all relevant stakeholders and engage them in meaningful dialogue to pave the way for lasting solutions to the power challenges in Oyo State. The committee is expected to report back within two weeks of the plenary session.
