Saki United FC Wins 2022 Aiteo Trophy, Set to Represent Oyo State at National

Oke-Ogun based Saki United Football Club on Wednesday evening clinched victory in the 2022 Oyo State Aiteo Cup final played at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, in Ibadan, the state capital.

The Asabari Warriors lifted the trophy for the first time since 2013 after defeating Housing Football Club, Ibadan by 3 – 2 in the final, watched by mammoth crowd.

The non-league side and Ibadan Football Association (IFA) League runners up, booked a place at the final stage after beating Shooting Stars 5-4 at the semi final via penalty shoot-out, following a two-all draw at the regulation time.

With this victory, the clubside will represent Oyo State in the National Aiteo Cup scheduled to commence at yet-to-be given date across the country. Also, Housing Corporation will join the champion to represent the state.

It would be recalled Saki United defeated Shooting Stars FC 5 – 4 via penalty in the semi final match, after the 90 minutes ended 2-2 to book a place in the final.

Oyo State Housing Corporation FC under the tutelage of Coach Sanusi Musiliu also defeated Oyo ‘A’ from Oyo Town 3-2 on penalties after a one-all draw.

An early opener by Saki United winger, Soliu Awhal in the first 12th minute gave the Oke Ogun side a deserved lead. Saka Saheed doubled the lead seven minutes later after a defensive error to end the first half 2-0 lead.

With 10 minutes of play at the second half, Housing Corporation FC reduced the tally after the centre referee awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box. Omole Segun converted the spot kick.

Saki United, restored two-zero advantage for the second time from a goal mouth scramble by Saka Saheed, who grabbed a brace in his first state Aiteo Cup final.

Oyo State Housing Corporation FC were unfazed at this setback to their ambition to win the title as they continued to advance up field at every opportunity. At the 85th minute, they got the reward from Yussuf Adekunle to reduce the tally once again.

Efforts made by runners up of 2021 Governor ‘Seyi Makinde Pre-season Tournament to send the game into extra time, were fruitless as the centre referee pointed to the centre field for fulltime after five additional minutes.

Meanwhile, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Oyo State chapter has congratulated finalists of the state Aiteo Cup competition, Saki United and Housing Corporation over their unprecedented success in the competition.

The two clubs reportedly caused the biggest upset so far in the competition by edging out the more popular and perennial finalists, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan and Crown Football Club of Ogbomoso on their way to the final.

Housing Corporation, on their own, bundled out Crown Football Club at the quarter final stage of the competition.

Oyo SWAN, in its congratulatory message signed by the Chairman of the Association, Niyi Alebiosu and its Secretary, Adewale Tijani eulogised the players and coaching crew of the two teams for their feat.

Oyo SWAN charged the two teams to represent the state well and continue their giant killing work at the national level of the competition.

The association also congratulated the leadership of Ibadan Football Association (IFA) for grooming the two finalists who grabbed the Aiteo Cup tickets from the more established and popular opponents – 3SC and Crown.

Both Saki United and Housing Corporation participated in the recently completed IFA League.

In the competition organised by the Ibadan Football Association, Saki United emerged second behind the Champions, 3SC.

Meanwhile, Oyo SWAN has noted that the Rotimi Ali led leadership of the IFA deserved commendations for putting up the competition which soundly prepared Saki United and Housing Corporation, for their victorious battles at the State Aiteo Cup.
