Two Dead, Two Injured as Bus Rams Into Truck on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway

Barely 72 hours after a fatal accident claimed four lives leaving eight others with varying degrees of injuries on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, another fatal accident has claimed two lives, leaving two others injured along the same corridor on Monday.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps indicated that the accident involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with number plate — GME 841XC and a waste disposal truck with number plate — KSF 320 XY, adding that it occurred at Mowe axis while it was headed towards Ibadan.

The Public Relations Officer, TRACE, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi said the driver of the commercial bus carrying 18 passengers was speeding and it ran into the stationary truck which parked due to mechanical problem.

He said one passenger died in the commercial bus while a wheelbarrow pusher was equally killed, as the vehicle hit him before ramming into the truck.

“According to eyewitness account, the crash occurred on the outward section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when a commercial bus fully loaded with 18 passengers due to excessive speed, rammed into a stationary waste truck, which developed a mechanical problem.

“One of the passengers in the bus died on the spot, while the other victim was a wheelbarrow pusher who was caught in the unfortunate circumstances around the axis”, Akinbiyi stated.

The TRACE spokesman said the corpses of the victims had been released to their kinsmen while the injured had been taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

It was reported to be a joint operation by the personnel of the TRACE, Police, Ogun State Ambulance and Emergency Services and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

TRACE has however called on drivers to avoid speeding, in view of its attendant consequences.
