Who Should Succeed Seyi Makinde in 2027? Series 3: Meet Akin Alabi, the Entrepreneur-Turned-Lawmaker

As the current administration of Governor Seyi Makinde winds down, Oyo Affairs team has taken it upon itself to compile profiles of potential candidates who could take up the mantle of power in 2027.

In our previous two series, we showcased two individuals: 46-year-old Bolanle Aminat Sarumi and Ipapo-born Beulah Adeoye.

Today, we turn our attention to 48-year-old Akin Alabi, the entrepreneur-turned-lawmaker.

From Humble Beginnings to Political Influence

Born on March 31, 1977, in the city of Ibadan, Oyo State, Akinola Adekunle Alabi’s journey is a testament to foresight, determination, and the ability to adapt and innovate. From an early age, he showed an entrepreneurial spirit, a trait that would later define his career.

Growing up, he attended Command Children School, Ibadan, and later moved to Federal Government College, Enugu for his secondary education. While many of his peers dreamed of traditional careers, Akin saw opportunities in unconventional places. This mindset led him to pursue a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business Administration from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, equipping him with the foundational knowledge that would serve him well in business.

But Akin Alabi wasn’t one to stop at just one degree. He earned a Master’s degree in Marketing from the University of Liverpool, a Bachelor of Science in International Relations from Lead City University, Ibadan, and a Master’s in International Relations from Middlesex University, UK. Additionally, he obtained a certificate in Intellectual Property Strategy from Harvard University.

Building an Empire: The Birth of NairaBET and a ₦600 Billion Industry

Akin Alabi’s entrepreneurial instinct kicked in early, but it wasn’t until 2009 that he made his mark in an industry that was, at the time, virtually untapped in Nigeria. He founded NairaBET, Nigeria’s first online sports betting company, at a time when the idea of digital gaming was still foreign to most Nigerians.

What started as an experiment soon turned into a ₦600 billion ($2 billion USD) industry, with over 60 million Nigerians aged 18 to 40 participating daily. Today, the gaming industryis one of Nigeria’s largest entertainment markets, contributing significantly to the economy, directly employing thousands and indirectly employing millions.

NairaBET not only pioneered digital gaming in Nigeria but also transformed the industry by introducing structured online platforms and responsible gaming measures. The sector now provides numerous employment opportunities, from retail agents to digital marketers, software developers, and customer service representatives, making it one of the biggest job providers in Nigeria’s tech-driven economy.

His love for sports extended beyond business. He also established two football clubs. Akin Alabi FC and Lekki United F.C., two football club that gives young talents the platform to pursue their dreams.

The Leap into Politics: From Boardrooms to the House of Representatives

Despite his success in business, Alabi knew that true impact required more than financial success—it required policy change. He saw firsthand how government regulations could either stifle or enable businesses like his, and he wanted to be part of the solution.

He took a bold step into politics, contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives to represent Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency in 2015 and later returning to contest in 2019. His grassroots connection, business acumen, and deep understanding of economic policies resonated with voters.

Despite being a new legislator, he was appointed the House Committee Chairman on Governmental Affairs. By 2023, his impact was undeniable, earning him a re-election. Recognizing his leadership, he was also appointed the House Committee Chairman on Works, trusting him to lead the oversight on Nigeria’s infrastructure.

Championing Reforms: A Legislative Focus on Progress

Akin Alabi’s legislative work is built on the same principles that made him a successful entrepreneur: innovation, problem-solving, and impact-driven policies. His focus areas in the House of Representatives include:

• Ease of Doing Business – Advocating policies that reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks for businesses, ensuring a more seamless economic environment.

• Healthcare Reform – Pushing for better healthcare accessibility and affordability for Nigerians.

• Economic Empowerment – Supporting initiatives that uplift small businesses, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion.

His work in the National Assembly reflects his commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses and improving the lives of everyday Nigerians.

Beyond Politics: The Author and Philanthropist

Even as a lawmaker, Akin Alabi remains an entrepreneur at heart. He has shared his insights through books that have become must-reads for Nigerian business owners:

• Small Business, Big Money – A guide for entrepreneurs looking to navigate Nigeria’s business environment and scale small businesses.

• How to Sell to Nigerians – A deep dive into understanding Nigerian consumer behavior and crafting effective marketing strategies.

His passion for giving back is evident through the Akin Alabi Foundation, which focuses on education, healthcare, and community development. Whether through scholarship programs, hospital donations, or business funding, he continues to bridge the gap between policy and real-life impact.

A Man of Many Hats

Beyond his career and philanthropy, Akin Alabi is a family man. He is married to Damilare Alabi, and together, they have children.

And when he’s not drafting policies or running businesses, he indulges in his lifelong love for football, passionately supporting Shooting Stars Sports Club (Ibadan) and Manchester United (EPL).
