Atiku Calls For Unity between Warring Factions in Oyo State PDP

The former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has made moves to reunite the different factions in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State.

Alhaji Abubakar who was in the state as part of an invitation to witness the Salami Stadium commissioning on Wednesday 1st September 2021, held meetings with the leaders of the factions in the party to reach a truce and to end the conflict in the party.

The former Vice President listened to the grievances of the leaders of the factions in the party especially as their agitations were against some of the actions of the state governor, Engr Seyi Makinde.

The aggrieved party members said that the governor is not committed to doing the biddings of the members of the party and that his style of leadership negates their expectations when they voted for him in 2019.

They laid emphasis on the fact that they have made complaints and have had series of meetings which were not bearing any fruit and they have come to a resolve to use all the machinery within their powers to remove him from office come 2021

They said “We don’t want further meetings because, during the meeting we held with Saraki in the first week of last month, the governor made certain commitments and assured the mediators that their commitments would be actualised by the end of August which till now, nothing has been done.

That further added that they had previously tried to give the governor the benefit of doubt and stay calm to see his next line of actions all to no avail.

In his response, the PDP presidential candidate at the 2019 general elections, Atiku Abubakar sympathised with the aggrieved Parties while pleading with them to give peace a chance and not try to work against the governor as well as the interest of the party as a whole.

He promised to hold another peace talk with the faction and the governor to put their issues to bed and move forward as a united party especially as the 2023 elections is fast approaching and oneness is of the essence in winning the election.

The meeting which was held on Thursday, 2nd September at the Carlton Gate Hotel, Idi Ape, Ibadan, had in attendance, Chief Nureni Akanbi, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, Alhaji Bola Akinyemi representing the faction while Dr. Aliyu Babangida the former governor of Niger State, Senator Dino Melaye and Senator Abiodun Olujimi accompanied Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

As of the time of this report, it is unclear if this meeting indicates Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s interest in running for the 2023 presidential election or it’s just an act of goodwill being a party stalwart.
