The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has arrived at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos State, returning from Canada to commence his traditional coronation rites.

Owoade, accompanied by his wife, was sighted by Punch at approximately 6:25 pm on Wednesday. His arrival was marked by a vibrant reception, featuring traditional dancers and drummers, and attended by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Idris Aregbe.

Earlier this week, Owoade’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye, confirmed that preparations for the rites were complete.

Durojaiye stated, “As part of the processes, Alaafin Owoade would visit a number of houses to offer sacrifices, make appeasements, and even sleep over at some of the houses to carry out some night rites.

“After performing the traditional rites at some traditional homes in Oyo town, the new Alaafin will then enter Ipebi (seclusion) for the conclusion of the traditional rites within a secluded part of the Alaafin palace.”

He further explained that the ancestral rituals conducted during Ipebi would mark the pinnacle of the coronation process before Owoade is officially crowned as the Alaafin.

Durojaiye emphasized the sacredness of the Alaafin institution, noting that it has earned widespread respect and admiration over the years due to its deep-rooted traditions and historical significance.

“The institution inspires nothing short of reverence. The legendary feats of the Titan of Yorubaland in times past were blessings of oral history, with in-depth documentation of historical accomplishments.
